This article aims to identify the existence of a laughter community in Portugal late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Based on research into beginnings humour periodicals published Portugal, corpus consisting newspapers between 1797 1835 was analysed, from first which used systematically as resource (Almocreve de Petas) until establishment Constitutional Monarchy. With concept mind, evidence sought that it present period covers political, social economic transition Ancien Régime modern society, having main players writers, editors, printers, readers listeners, process production, reception, circulation appropriation ideas meanings. process, developed public sphere, also played part forming incipient opinion. To detect this community, clichés, jocular expressions comic stories conveyed by were identified. Very often they found have kept same meaning had at time, while some survived with slight changes, others simply no longer make people laugh.
